What Essential Question Drives My Work?
This year the essential question for my work is "How Has Consumerism Degraded Society?". I seek to comment on the negative effects of Capitalism and Consumerism in today and tomorrow's society, covering topics such as pollution, labor exploitation, crippling debt, mega-corporations, and the future dystopia we may see soon.
Most of my work demonstrates my practice in acrylics which is becoming my strength. I start by drawing in a sketchbook, then I usually paint a background and experiment over if with the sketch I drew beforehand. I've used this technique in all of my works excluding #10.
#6 is an example of an experiment in working in a large size. #4, 5, 7, and 9 are experiments in using symbolism to describe topics. #8 is an experiment combining digital media and acrylic paint.
I have gone back to clean up #4, and I have plans to go back over #5, #9, and #10, and I am considering redoing #1 and #2.
I've mainly stuck with my original problem, but I also plan on covering what consumerism will look like in the future.
During my investigation I've been primarily practicing my Acrylic Paint techniques. For every investigation with the exception of one I have used acrylic, and for some I have added other media, including ink, colored pencil, and digital. If you compare #4 to #11, it is obvious that I have gotten better at my techniques. I've learned that if I add more frantic textures to the bolder lines and shapes, the art piece looks more developed and complex.
My work includes many examples of experimentation. Investigation #6 shows me using a larger canvas and making a more grandiose piece, allowing me more room to add big details. Investigation #8 sees me combining digital media with acrylic paint to add a different texture. Investigation #11 involved experimenting with a different style, and I wound up using some metallic acrylic paints to add a different level of sheen to the piece. These three in particular are a few of my best works and I believe that my experimentation on these pieces led them to be some of my best.
At this point in my sustained investigation I have made some revisions to #4 to clean and sharpen it up, and I have plans to revise #5, #9, and #10. I may consider heavily redoing #1 and #2.
